With reference to the development of interconnections with neighboring countries, Terna's activity pursues on the one hand the objective of greater security, affordability and sustainability of supply and, on the other, investments in foreign countries, representing an essential for the necessary degree of diversification vis-à-vis investments in Italy. This, in a "country system" approach, also in cooperation with electricity companies with consolidated presence abroad. With regard to the former, Italy is the most interconnected country in Europe and the most connected country in Europe, in particular with Mediterranean countries: France, Slovenia, Greece and soon Malta (in 2015) and Montenegro (in 2019). 
In this context, on July 23, 2014 Terna and the subsidiary Terna Rete Italia established the company Terna Interconnector that will focus on the development and implementation of the "Italy-France Interconnector" Project for which, on December 16, 2013, the Parent Company and a number of trade federations signed the Memorandum of Understanding for the implementation and management of interconnection infrastructures with abroad ("Interconnections or Interconnectors”).
